How to fix the “Object reference not set to an instance of an object” journal error
If you see the error:
Object reference not set to an instance of an object. Processing response…
please try resetting your authentication. This often resolves issues with sending journal entries to your accounts system.
Steps to reset authentication:
- Go to the journal you are trying to send.
- Click the small white triangle next to Continue.
- Select Reset Authentication.
- Re-enter your accounts system credentials.
- Click Send again to resend the journal.
Example with Xero:
In Xero, you will see the same small white triangle beside Send where you can select Reset Authentication, then re-enter your Xero login details before sending the journal again

Q. Why do I get 'Length must not be greater than 18' error when exporting my payroll journal to my accounting software?
A. This means that there is a field within the payroll journal that is longer than the maximum characters allowed by the accounting software. Check fields such as the Employer name and Payment reference being used to check that they are 18 characters or less (including spaces).
