When you take over a payroll part-way through the tax year, enter each employee's year-to-date figures from their previous provider in the Mid Year Totals utility, found within the Employees tab.
Figures BrightPay needs
BrightPay calculates tax and NIC from the point you start processing payroll in BrightPay once the following fields are completed:
- First section: Gross pay to date
- Second section: Taxable pay to date and Tax to date
- Third section: Gross earnings, Total NIC and Employee NIC
NIC earnings bands
If you have the NIC earnings band figures from your previous provider, for example NIC gross at LEL, LEL to PT, PT to UEL and above UEL, we recommend entering them in the Mid Year Totals as well.
They aren't needed for BrightPay to calculate NIC. However, if they are not entered, the gross pay and employee and employer NIC totals will still be correct, but the breakdown shown on year-end documents such as the P60 will not display the full information.
For directors, see Moving to BrightPay mid-year - Directors.
